THE PROJECT

According to the Harvard Database of Useful Biological Numbers, one blink of our eye lasts about 100 milliseconds. In this infinitesimal time 4,000 non-human persons are wiped out by our food madness. For this reason there are already over 700 human-persons who have decided to bear witness to this horror on their own skin, having one or more Xs tattooed, inspired by the tattoos of Alfredo Meschi (anti-speciesist activist) and letting themselves be portrayed by Massimo Giovannini (internationally renowned photographer ) with a powerful black and white diptych.

Meschi has 40,000 Xs tattooed on his body (the number of Animal victims per second). But every X counts, every single individual counts and whether they have one or 10, 100, 1,000 Xs, every person who has taken and will take part in this project becomes the protagonist of this unprecedented artistic performance.

When people come into skin-to-skin contact with horror numbers, powerful and revolutionary energies are released. Many people have decided to become activists and artists, to seriously explore this struggle for justice, to start raising awareness among other individuals, thanks to this project of ours.

The images of our Xs have already reached millions of people, contaminating the most varied social environments and the potential for raising awareness of a community of 4000 members are therefore huge, exponential.

Once the milestone of 4,000 tattooed people has been reached, "IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE" will be taken to the most important contemporary art museums, on a permanent international tour. A first exhibition-performance has already been hosted to our great joy by the Macro Asilo in Rome.

ARTIVISM

We said earlier that Meschi is an anti-speciesist artist, now we need to go deeper.

Artivism, a fusion of art and activism, is a term used for the first time by the Big Frente Zapatista and EZLN members after a meeting in 1997 and is immediately expressed in the context of the struggles for global justice. However, it was only ten years later, in 2008, that this syncretic neologism entered the official academic writings with reference to the works of the American artivist M.K. Asante:

“The artivist (artist + activist) uses her artistic talents to fight and struggle against injustice and oppression—by any medium necessary. The artivist merges commitment to freedom and justice with the pen, the lens, the brush, the voice, the body, and the imagination. The artivist knows that to make an observation is to have an obligation.”

However, we must reach even more recent moments to talk about antispeciesist artivism. Anti-speciesism is the philosophical, political and cultural movement that opposes speciesism; with the latter we mean the attribution of a different value and moral status to individuals solely on the basis of their species.

Anti-speciesism also rejects and tries to fight the ideology of domination which conveys speciesism in our society together with all the other hateful discriminations.

It is a very young movement, albeit with powerful potential. In fact, if by now the term "vegan" is on everyone's lips, few people know the anti-speciesist philosophy and political vision, the one that helps not to, unjustly, reduce veganism to a passing health trend and to frame it instead as a revolutionary struggle for liberation .

“IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE” fits into this decidedly pioneering framework of anti-speciesist artivism.

The madness of the incessant massacre of forty thousand sentient beings per second then becomes, in this perspective, a mirror of the madness of an entire civilization.

In fact, 40,000 children die every day due to malnutrition. 40,000 are also the migrants who, from 2000 to today, have lost their lives in the Mediterranean looking for a better future. In the world, 40,000 girls are married off to someone every day against their will. In the United States, the "beacon" of Western civilization, 40,000 are the annual deaths from drug addiction, 40,000 from firearms, car accidents, suicide and 40,000 are the boys and girls victims of sexual abuse. The amount of plastic that contaminates the oceans every second is equal to 40,000 half-liter bottles and in the opinion of some of the most brilliant minds of the twentieth century, 40,000 are the days that separate our civilization from the collapse and the sixth mass extinction . For others, less optimistic, it would be only 40,000 hours. On the brink of extinction, however, an explosion of life shows itself in a glimmer of love: 40,000 microorganisms are exchanged with a single kiss.

The 4,000 Xs, in addition to permanently fixing that tenth of a second of the animal holocaust for which human beings are responsible, signal the future scenario for which the planet and who inhabits the planet are destined if we are not capable of an evolution of consciousness, if we do not carry out the empathy revolution.

The strength of the project lies precisely in its openness and in its universality, dictated by the awareness of the condition of oppression that unites all living things that populate the planet. The importance of such a message cannot therefore be reduced by belonging only to a particular community. The discrimination that would arise in this sense would give rise to a paradox that misrepresents the spirit that moves the two artists and the manifesto that the project wants to disseminate. Anyone who has had the opportunity to confront, directly or indirectly, with the many faces of oppression and injustice exercised on animals, human or non-human, and on the entire planet, is welcome and becomes a witness and instrument of diffusion of that empathy needed to free us from oppression and madness.

IL PROGETTO

Secondo l’Harvard Database of Useful Bio-logical Numbers un nostro battito di ciglia dura circa 100 millisecondi. In questo tempo così infinitesimale 4.000 persone non-umane vengono spazzate via dalla nostra follia alimentare. Per questo motivo sono già oltre 700 le persone-umane che hanno deciso di testimoniare questo orrore sulla propria pelle, facendosi tatuare una o più X, ispirate dai tatuaggi di Alfredo Meschi (artivista antispecista) e lasciandosi ritrarre da Massimo Giovannini (fotografo di fama internazionale) con un potente dittico in bianco e nero.

Meschi di X ne ha tatuate sul proprio corpo 40.000 (il numero di vittime Animali al secondo). Ma ogni X conta, ogni singolo individuo conta e che ne abbia una o 10, 100, 1.000 X, ogni persona che ha preso e che prenderà  parte a questo progetto, diventa protagonista di questa performance artistica senza precedenti.

Quando le persone entrano in contatto, da pelle a pelle, con i numeri dell'orrore, si liberano energie potenti e rivoluzionarie. Molte persone hanno deciso di diventare attiviste e artiviste, di esplorare seriamente questa lotta di giustizia, di iniziare a coscientizzare altri individui, grazie a questo nostro progetto.

Le immagini delle nostre X hanno già raggiunto milioni di persone, contaminando gli ambienti più variegati e le potenzialità di coscientizzazione di una community di 4000 membri sono quindi enormi, esponenziali.

Una volta raggiunto il traguardo delle 4000 persone tatuate  “IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE” verrà portato nei più importanti musei di arte contemporanea, in un tour internazionale permanente. Una prima mostra-performance è già stata ospitata con nostra grande gioia dal Macro Asilo di Roma.

ARTIVISMO

Prima abbiamo detto che Meschi è un artista antispecista, è necessario adesso approfondire. L’artivismo, fusione di arte e attivismo, è un termine utilizzato per la prima volta dal Big Frente Zapatista e dai membri dell'EZLN dopo un ritrovo nel 1997 e si esprime fin da subito nel contesto delle lotte per una giustizia globale.  E’ solo dieci anni più tardi però, nel 2008, che questo neologismo sincratico fa il suo ingresso negli scritti accademici ufficiali con riferimento alle opere dell’artivista americano M.K. Asante: 

“L'artivista (artista + attivista) usa i suoi talenti artistici per combattere e lottare contro l'ingiustizia e l'oppressione, con qualsiasi medium necessario. L'artivista unisce l'impegno per la libertà e la giustizia con la penna, l'obiettivo, il pennello, la voce, il corpo e l'immaginazione. L'artivista sa che fare un'osservazione è avere un obbligo.”

Dobbiamo però giungere a momenti ancor più recenti per parlare di artivismo antispecista. L’antispecismo è il movimento filosofico, politico  e culturale che si oppone allo specismo; con quest'ultimo si intende l'attribuzione di un diverso valore e status morale agli individui unicamente in base alla loro specie di appartenenza. L’antispecismo rifiuta e cerca di combattere anche l'ideologia del dominio che veicola nella nostra società lo specismo insieme a tutte le altre odiose discriminazioni. È un movimento molto giovane, seppur con potenzialità poderose. Se infatti ormai il termine “vegan” è sulla bocca di tutte e tutti, poche persone conoscono la filosofia e la visione politica antispecista, quella che contribuisce a non far ridurre ingiustamente  il veganismo a moda salutista passeggera e ad inquadrarlo invece come rivoluzionaria lotta di liberazione.

In questo quadro decisamente pioneristico di artivismo antispecista si inserisce “IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE”. La follia dell’incessante massacro dei quarantamila esseri senzienti al secondo diventa allora, in quest’ottica, uno specchio della follia di un’intera civiltà.  40.000 sono infatti le bambine ed i bambini che muoiono ogni giorno a causa della denutrizione. 40.000 anche i migranti che, dal 2000 ad oggi, hanno perso la vita nel Mediterraneo cercando un futuro possibile. 40.000 sono le bambine che ogni giorno vengono date in sposa a qualcuno contro la loro volontà. Negli Stati Uniti, “faro” della civiltà Occidentale, 40.000 sono i morti annuali per tossicodipendenze, 40.000 quelli per armi da fuoco, per incidenti d'auto, per suicidio e 40.000 sono le vittime minorenni di abusi sessuali. La quantità di plastica che ogni secondo contamina gli oceani è pari a 40.000 bottiglie da mezzo litro e nell’opinione di alcune tra le più brillanti menti del XX secolo, 40.000 sono i giorni che separano la nostra civiltà dal collasso e dalla sesta estinzione di massa. Per altri, meno ottimisti, sarebbero solo 40.000 ore. Sul baratro dell'estinzione, però, un’esplosione di vita si mostra in uno spiraglio di amore: 40.000 sono i microorganismi che vengono scambiati con un singolo bacio.

Le 4.000 X oltre a fissare quindi in maniera permanente quel decimo di  secondo dell’olocausto animale di cui l’essere umano è responsabile, segnalano lo scenario futuro a cui è destinato il pianeta e chi il pianeta lo abita se non saremo capaci di un’evoluzione della coscienza, se non attueremo la rivoluzione dell’empatia.

La forza del progetto risiede proprio nella sua apertura e nella sua universalità, dettata dalla coscienza della condizione dell’oppressione che accomuna tutto il vivente che popola il pianeta. L'importanza di un tale messaggio non può essere quindi ridotta dall'appartenenza a una determinata comunità. La discriminazione che verrebbe a crearsi in tal senso darebbe luogo a un paradosso che mal rappresenta lo spirito che muove i due artisti e il manifesto che il progetto vuole diffondere. Chiunque abbia avuto modo di confrontarsi, direttamente o indirettamente, con i molteplici volti dell'oppressione e dell'ingiustizia esercitata sugli animali, umani o non umani che siano e sull’intero pianeta, è benvenuto/a e diventa testimone e strumento di diffusione di quell'empatia necessaria a liberarci dall'oppressione e dalla follia.
